Puerto Banús
Puerto José Banús, better known as Puerto Banús, is a luxury marina. It is part of the district of Nueva Andalucía (Marbella), in the province of Málaga, Spain.
Since it was opened in May 1970, this tourist enclave has become one of the largest entertainment centres on the Costa del Sol, achieving international fame and prestige. It has been awarded the Gold Medal for Tourism Merit in 1975 and the Gold Mercury International for its action in favour of the development of economic, cultural and social cooperation. The architect Noldi Schreck, who participated in the design and construction of Beverly Hills, was visited in 1966 by Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe, to ask him to design the Beach Club of the Marbella Club Hotel. His first job served to meet José Banús and convince him that Puerto Banús was not a suitable place to build huge skyscrapers. He proposed to make an Andalusian town with a marina, the first port built by a single architect. Together they managed to give it the touch of sophistication that Puerto Banús achieved. José Banús became the most important developer of residential tourism complexes on the Costa del Sol and the port took his name.
The lavish complex opened in May 1970. Among those attending were the Spanish Prince Juan Carlos and Princess Sofia of Greece, the Princes of Monaco Rainier and Grace Kelly, the Aga Khan, the film director Roman Polanski, the founder of Playboy Hugh Hefner and Dr. Christian Barnard, a pioneer in heart transplants. A young Julio Iglesias was hired to liven up the gala.
